Driving and cell phones don’t
mix. According
to University of Utah researchers, people missed
twice as many traffic signals while carrying
on cell phone conversations and took longer to
react to those signals they DID detect. The
results were identical for hand-held and hands-free
cell phone users. Practicing
safe cell phone use as a family can deter bad
practices, so discuss this information and establish
some safe-talking rules:
- If you’re driving and the phone
rings, pull over to answer.
- Make family members promise
not to call and drive. If
they call and they’re in transit, tell them
to hang up, pull over, and call you back.
- Teach family members to plan
for extra time to make phone calls BEFORE
they get in the car.
