It's important
to note that the Saints are wonderful examples
for everyday people like us.They
were not perfect, but they were strong enough
to say a total "Yes" to God and this is part
of what makes them Saints.
The Gospel tells us that Mary
Magdalene, "out of whom the Lord had cast seven
evil spirits," was one of the faithful women
at the foot of the cross and was present again
at his tomb on Easter Sunday, to anoint him. She
is the first to announce that Jesus has been
raised from the dead. Later
she encounters the risen Jesus, and begins to
see with eyes of faith. Belief
prompts her to action, and so she goes to tell
the others, "I have seen the Lord."
Mary Magdalene is first in every
listing of Jesus' female disciples (Mt 27.55-56,
Mk 15.40-41, Lk 8.2-3). She
seems to have been the leader of a group of women
who followed Jesus from the beginning of his
ministry, through his death and beyond. All
four Gospels name her as one of the first eye
witnesses of Jesus' resurrection. From
all this, we can presume that she was a special
friend and disciple of Jesus' and an important
leader among the first Christians.
