When
I was asked to write a Youth Talk story I thought
to myself, Ok sure I can write it but what about?
Then several weeks later I sat down to do my Government
homework. I was doing an assignment with a popular
magazine and I had to write a summary on three
different stories I read. I came across an article
that I couldn’t pass up, and the headline
read “Mary Magdalene Saint or Sinner?”
Now me being Catholic I really noticed this title
so I started reading it and I thought that this
was story that Youth Talks needs to hear about.
I decided to tell you three different points of
views for this story.
Well
let’s first talk about what the Catholic
Church said. They said Magdalene’s standard
image, as a reformed prostitute is not supported
by the text of the Bible. Many Christian churches
would add her importance as an example of the
power of Christ’s love to save even the
most fallen humanity, and of repentance. Centuries
of Catholic teaching also established her colloquial
identity as the bad girl who became the hope of
all bad girls, the saved siren active not only
in the overheated imaginations of parochial-school
students but also as the patron of institutions
for wayward women.
Now
in this article several different people had something
to share about the topic of if is she good or
bad. One woman states that Mary is a saint. She
celebrates a traditional feast day on July 22
every year. She also states, “Mary got worked
over by the church, but she is still there for
us. If we can bring her story forward, we can
get back to what Jesus was really about.”
So
what do I have to say, well I’m not sure.
I think she stands for an everyday person. We
have all sinned and Jesus still loves us just
the same. She also sinned and he still cared for
her. We all go to confession to be forgiven for
our sins. She was forgiven for her sins by taking
care of Jesus at the time when he needed someone
to be there for him. Doesn’t that mean that
she is just like the rest of us?
